Georgia's Historical Attractions
Since Savannah was Georgia's first city, it is natural that the oldest historical attractions in the state should be found here. For those interested in art and history, Savannah provides an eclectic mixture that combines European elements with elements that are uniquely American and is a fascinating place to visit.
One place that exhibits Savannah's unique mix of art and history is the Colonial Park Cemetery. This unique cemetery is adorned with artful tombstones that tell the story of the early part of Georgia's history. Containing the graves of some of Georgia's earliest governors and prominent businessmen, the Colonial Park Cemetery truly gives the visitor a unique view into the formative years of this interesting state.
In addition to the unique history that is preserved in the Colonial Park Cemetery, Savannah's city squares preserve the story of the development of Georgia's first city. In these historic squares, fine examples of 19th century architecture are preserved along the narrow lanes that are lined by sleepy oaks. Through the efforts of a passionate preservation society, Savannah's city squares bring Georgia's unique history to life in a way that visitors thoroughly enjoy.
Although Savannah's attractions are very interesting, more of Georgia's unique history is preserved in the state's capital of Atlanta. At the Atlanta History Center, visitors can tour one of the largest history museums to be found in the southeastern United States. Showcasing exhibits on Georgia's unique history in several different historic homes and sharing its role in displays on the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, the Atlanta History Center completely educates visitors on the entirety of Georgia's fascinating history. All in all, the Atlanta History Center is a must-see attraction for anyone interested in history.
