Historical Attractions of Texas

From its earliest days, Texas has faced challenges that seemed insurmountable. One historical attraction that tells the story of how Texans will always fight a good fight when the odds are stacked against them is the Alamo in San Antonio. Originally built as a barracks to house Spanish soldiers defending the mission town of San Antonio de Bexar, this historic structure became famous around the world when Texans of all races, creeds, and colors banded together here in 1836 to stand for against the tyranny of Generalissimo Miguel Lopez de Santa Ana. Having fought bravely for 12 days against an army that outnumbered the Texans 10 to 1, the Texans who died here gave Texas her famous cry of "Remember the Alamo." Today, the Alamo is a museum that welcomes visitors to come and explore the story of these courageous men and to learn how Texas stood against all odds and gained her freedom as an independent nation. All in all, anyone visiting this fabulous institution will walk away with a greater appreciation for Texas and how determined her people are to maintain their freedom.

In addition to the illustrious exhibits at the Alamo, Texas is home to another rather fascinating historical attraction. The Texas Prison Museum in Huntsville hosts exhibits and displays dedicated to telling the story of how Texas has maintained law and order within its borders since its earliest days. One of the museum's highlights is Old Sparky, which is one of the oldest electric chairs known to exist in any museum. It is believed that over 300 prisoners met the end of their sentences on Death Row by taking a final seat in Old Sparky.
