With 82 miles of shoreline and some of the best fishing grounds in the state, Stonewall Jackson Lake gives visitors a great place to enjoy boating, swimming, and fishing. This bunker was designed in the 1960s as a last-resort hideout for congressional leaders in the event of an all-out nuclear or biological attack by the Soviet Union. Built beneath West Virginia's Greenbrier Resort, this bunker was a top secret US Government installation until the 1990s. At that time, the Congressional Bunker was determined to be obsolete and it became one of West Virginia's enduring historical attractions that testifies to the fear that gripped the country at the height of the Cold War. All in all, visitors to the Congressional Bunker leave with a great appreciation for the fact that the Cold War never turned out to be the actual war that so many people feared it could turn into.
