Before these two armies left, over 23,000 men would die. This battle produced more casualties than any other single day battle in American military history. The light that came out of this tragedy was the Emancipation Proclamation which eventually led to the abolition of slavery in the United States. To truly understand the struggle for equality in the US, one must visit this battlefield and investigate its dramatic story.
