Maryland's Historical Attractions

Because Maryland has played such a pivotal role throughout the history of the United States, it is full of interesting historical attractions. One historical attraction in Maryland that illustrates the impact of industry on American culture is the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum. This museum in Baltimore tells the story of how one of the nation's first railroads developed in the state and how that railroad grew into one of the nation's largest private rail networks. With interactive exhibits and fascinating train rides, this museum is a must-see attraction for any visitor desiring to know more about the thrilling story of American rail transportation.

Another fascinating site that illustrates the development of American transportation in Maryland is the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park. This national landmark stretches along a 184 mile canal from Georgetown to Cumberland. This canal is a step back to the 18th and 19th Centuries when canals were opening the western US to settlement and new western markets to the finished products of the nation's burgeoning industrial base. With its carefully preserved locks, lockhouses, and aqueducts, this enchanting national park offers visitors the opportunity to step back in time and learn first hand about the growth of America's massive transportation network.

In addition to having magnificent attractions dedicated to telling the story of America's transportation network, Maryland has preserved battlefields from the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War. One place that truly tells the story of America is the Antietam National Battlefield. On this battlefield immigrants from Ireland, Germany, and other European countries stood shoulder to shoulder with native born Americans from the North and South and fought one of the most tragic battles in the history of the United States. This battlefield was the bloody place where the Union Army of the Potomac and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia locked horns on September 17, 1862, during America's Civil War. Before these two armies left, over 23,000 men would die. This battle produced more casualties than any other single day battle in American military history. The light that came out of this tragedy was the Emancipation Proclamation which eventually led to the abolition of slavery in the United States. To truly understand the struggle for equality in the US, one must visit this battlefield and investigate its dramatic story.

Maryland's Cultural Attractions

On top of possessing intriguing historical attractions, Maryland has some of the nation's finest cultural attractions. One magnificent cultural attraction is Boordy Vineyards in Hydes. This vineyard is Maryland's oldest family operated winery and vineyard. With tours illustrating the fascinating art of winemaking, this beautiful historic vineyard and winery offers visitors an opportunity to savor some of the finest wines produced on this side of the Atlantic. All in all, anyone visiting this attraction is sure to walk away with a finer appreciation for the unique products of American agriculture.

For music lovers, Montgomery County's Strathmore Music Center is a must-see attraction. This cutting-edge concert hall seats 2,000 people in a world-class venue that features some of the finest artistic performances seen in the US. With a variety of musical concerts and children's performances, this facility gives visitors a premier look at the musical traditions of the American culture.

With everything that Maryland has to offer, it is easy to see why many visitors keep coming back to vacation here year after year. It offers a microcosm of American culture with plenty of history and fascinating cultural attractions.
